20ft vs 40ft Container: Size, Weight and When to Use Each

Updated October 25, 2026 · admin

Typical sizes

A 20ft container holds roughly 33 cubic metres and a 40ft container about twice that. Exact internal sizes, high-cube options and maximum weights vary by shipping line, so confirm with your booking.

When 20ft is the better choice

  • Heavy, compact cargo such as tiles, rice bags or machinery parts, where weight limits you before space does
  • Smaller volumes
  • Roads or sites with limits on long trailers

When 40ft is the better choice

  • Light, bulky cargo such as furniture, garments or plastic goods
  • Large volumes, where one 40ft is often cheaper than two 20ft
  • High-cube 40ft for tall cartons

Do not forget

Check the permitted payload with the line, the road limits for trucking and the weight declared on the bill of lading. An overweight container can be refused or cause fines.
