Demurrage and Detention Charges Explained (and How to Avoid Them)

Updated October 25, 2026 · admin

The difference

Demurrage is charged when a loaded container stays inside the port or terminal beyond the free days. Detention is charged when you keep the line’s container outside the port beyond the free days, for example at your warehouse.

Why they happen

  • Documents arrive late or are incomplete
  • Duty is not paid in time
  • Customs examination takes longer than planned
  • Trucks or labour are not ready
  • Empty container is not returned on time

How to avoid them

  • Send documents before the vessel arrives so the GD can be filed on day one
  • Pay duty promptly and plan trucks in advance
  • Unload fast, and return the empty on time
  • Ask for extra free days when booking, especially in peak season
  • If cargo is not ready, store it in a warehouse instead of paying daily charges

Free days

Free days differ by shipping line and by port. Check them in the booking and track the clock from the vessel arrival date.
