What they mean
FCL (full container load) means the whole container is yours. LCL (less than container load) means your cargo shares a container with other shippers and you pay by volume (CBM) or weight.
Which costs less
For small volumes LCL is usually cheaper, because you pay only for the space you use. As volume grows, a full container often becomes better value. The break-even point differs on every route, so get both quotes for your shipment.
Other things to compare
- Time: LCL needs consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at the destination, so it takes longer
- Handling: LCL cargo is handled more, so packing must be stronger
- Control: FCL lets you load at your own factory and seal the container
- Charges: LCL has handling charges at both ends, so check what is included
Quick rule of thumb
If your cargo fills less than about half of a 20ft container, ask for LCL. If it is more, compare. Always compare the total landed cost, not just the sea freight line.
